We chose to manufacture Woodsy Desk using only USA hardwoods like Maple, Cherry, and Walnut because of how incredibly strong, sustainable, and beautiful they are. Our competitors who claim to make “wooden” furniture often just use Pine or Poplar, softwoods that easily dent. These companies also tend to use plywood and engineered wood, a mix of plastic and wood glued together. Yuck!

Woodsy Desk is designed to take the pain out of assembling furniture. You’ll be done in under 5 minutes and not have to use any little wrenches or tools to put Woodsy Desk together. Precision-milled parts perfectly glide together, and thumb screws keep everything secure. Have add-ons? They’ll also take just a minute or two to install.

Cutting out the middlemen not only saves you money, it also means we test the quality of your desk at every point in the process.

Woodsy was founded as an alternative to Fast Furniture. We believe in 5 pillars of sustainability:

1) Furniture should be long-lasting. The longer something lasts, the less likely it is to end up in a landfill. Furniture should be built to last forever.

2) Furniture should be made locally. Shipping heavy furniture from Vietnam or China is an unsustainable (and expensive) process. By manufacturing and selling in the same country of origin, we drastically reduce greenhouse emissions.

3) Furniture should be biodegradable. Whether it’s the wood itself, the paper packaging, or the cotton straps used when shipping – every part in a piece of furniture should break down into organic materials.

4) Furniture should be repairable. We believe in your right to repair, so we design all our furniture and add-ons to be easily repaired. Each part is completely replaceable if you ever need to repair your desk outside of warranty. If a part is ever discontinued, the 3D diagrams and manufacturing instructions will be released for local woodshops to produce.

5) Furniture should be affordable. Furniture should be affordable. By making sustainable furniture accessible, we allow more consumers to make the right decision for the planet and their wallets. Now, that’s something everyone can believe in.

We’re Pete and David, and we’re the founding father and son (in-law) team here at Woodsy! We started Woodsy in 2019 with the idea of selling solid wood, American-made furniture that was actually affordable. In 2021 we launched our 1st Generation Woodsy Desk, and after successfully delivering all over the United States and working out the kinks of manufacturing, are back with our 2nd Generation Woodsy Desk on KickStarter!

Pete Schlebecker, our Head of Design, has been designing and manufacturing furniture for the past 39 years and has a Master’s Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. Prior to founding Woodsy in 2019, Pete worked at RockPaperRobot as the Head of Fabrication and helped launch the Ollie Chair on KickStarter in 2018, which raised $287,927.

David Chippendale, Pete’s son-in-law, spent the past 6 years as the CEO of Chip Studio, a technology company that builds software used by Fortune 500 companies. He is currently the CTO at Nexcom Global, a public company in Denmark that develops Artificial Intelligence. David has spent the past 4 years learning furniture design, manufacturing, and woodworking alongside Pete.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect to pay to upgrade to Cherry or Walnut?

The price of wood fluctuates, but we are doing everything in our power to purchase lumber in bulk to keep prices as low as possible. With that said, for upgrading to Cherry, you can expect to pay about 25% more than Maple. For upgrading to Walnut (a much more expensive wood), you can expect to pay about double.

What kind of wood do you use?

We use only hard solid wood in our furniture. This means we currently offer Walnut, Cherry, and Maple sourced from the United States. Our competitors often use what’s called “engineered wood” on the inside of their furniture – which is a melted combination of wood and plastic.

What is the difference between solid wood and plywood?

Solid Wood is exactly what it sounds like. Solid chunks of wood that are joined side by side. If you cut a piece of solid wood in half, all you would see is more wood. Plywood is made of bits and pieces of wood (and sometimes other stuff) that are blended and glued together into a board.

That’s why at Woodsy, we use only the best stuff. Solid Walnut, Cherry, and Maple sourced from the USA.

What’s the catch?

We swear there is none! The reason we started Woodsy was that we wanted solid wood furniture that was reasonably priced. We manufacture all of our furniture here in America, which does a few things to keep Woodsy Desk’s ultra-high quality and low price:

• Furniture is heavy and expensive to ship, by making Woodsy Desk in America, we save about 20% from overseas shipping.
• We manufacture Woodsy Desk ourselves, which means we don’t pay another company to make your desk. Saving us roughly 30% over outsourcing it.
• We bulk purchase lumber, which means we can get it at roughly 35% less than if you bought the same wood yourself.
• We don’t have a storefront. One if the biggest expenses when buying furniture in person is that the price of the retail space (rent, lighting, etc) has to be worked into the price. By shipping directly from our factory, we save another 10-20%.
